A BMW Or a Mercedes? Which Car is Better?

17 Mar 2022

BMP Autoservice camparison of BMW and Mercedes reliability

If you’ve been shopping around for Mercedes or BMW probably you were wandering which one is better or which one is more reliable. Definitely this is a subjective topic to discuss, but we are going to talk about it only from our own experience as a Sacramento located independent Luxury Auto Repair Facility. And yes, we are not going to make judgement here or a joke about German quality.

Two auto manufacturers have been around for decades, giving them a right to build a reputation for excellence, attention to detail, and commitment to high-end quality. Because of this exciting history, BMW and Mercedes have built up a reputation for a high-class transportation experience, we would say, luxury experience. So, their names have become synonymous with “must-have” for any luxury vehicle owner.

Let's say both developed their own crowd of fans, we would say "A Club".

But which one you want to own for a long term? Should you aim for a BMW, with its agile road-handling and excellent ergonomics? Or should you go for the Mercedes-Benz, with its long-running obsession with sensuous comfort?

Lets Dig In

Within a first five to six years and under a 100,000 miles you going to find all these cars are very comparable. Rust prevention is good, parts and components are typically not breaking. And usually under a 100,000 miles there is no much stress on vehicles to cause any significant failures. But when you are rolling in 10+ years market you can find some different trends. Both of them in a lower class as BMW 1, 3 series as well as Mercedes A, B, C class vehicles start breaking down more often where consequently in Mercedes world its a premium class car like the S-Class will still hold its own a lot better. You'll see less failure in an S-Class typically even you will see them very expensive, but also you'll see less "nickel-and-dime" failures then in a lower Mercedes or BMW cars.

Both are very close, but again, in this point Mercedes traditionally being a few less repaired, consistently a little bit more reliable than most of the BMWs in the same vintage.

Here are some problems you might be stumble on after 60-80 thousand miles: water pump replacement, coolant leaks, radiator, brakes pads and rotors, valve cover gaskets, pan gaskets, and a lot of cooling compartments will need more attention than Mercedes do. It doesn't means Mercedes does not have same problems but not that often as in a BMW world.

Another thing is a suspension parts. They are usually more costly for BMW than for a Mercedes cars. One of the reasons for this is because BMW cars are more sporty, to be honest.

So, as a conclusion, both automakers are very close, but slightly different. As a labor cost, parts cost typically more higher in a BMW world than in Mercedes. The choice which car is great to own 100% on you. In any circumstances we as a Dealership Alternative Luxury Cars Repair and Maintenance Shop keeping your back for decades.
