Dealerships or Independent? What's best for your needs?

Technician ready to start service BMW car

We've got the dealer corporate chains, independent, and DIY luxury car service options. We going to go through Pros and Cons in this article today. What you can expect from the dealer commercial chains, independent, and do it yourself.

The Dealer

Let's go through the Pros first. Number one: the dealer stamp of approval. This is probably first and biggest thing for car collectors like Ferrari owners, Lamborghini owners. You go to resell the vehicle and you want to get that stamp saying that it was done by factory trained technicians at a factory approved location. Another pro about the dealer is you're probably get a loaner car and this will be a factor for a lot of people. Third: expedited service. This doesn't mean you're going to get your car back quickly, but it just means that they've probably dealt with the same problem before, so they know right away all the associated parts to replace to make sure that you don't have to come back and they fully solve the problem. The last pro is factory trained master techs.

Cons: dealership price is number one issue. Hourly rate is much higher than any independent services. Also the parts they are charging at a top dollar price as well. Very often they replace not only the damaged part but also everything associated with this problem to avoid you'll be back soon for the same problem. In some cases this is not a bad thing, but overwork will cost you extra amount of money that you didn't expected in a beginning of the car fixing journey. Another con is a corporate machine. You cannot maintain a quality in a mass production.

Independent Shop

Most likely you'll get lower prices and more expertise because these facilities specialized on particular brand or brands and gained a lot of experience on those car models over the years (as we said, most likely). Another significant pro is you'll talk directly to the tech who dedicated and fully involved in your car issue solving, who can give you kind of time frame on what's going on and what needs to be done right away. Aftermarket options can be a pro as well at this point. In some cases there are some aftermarket solutions which can be a better solution to fix factory issues on your vehicle. For example parts. Parts in some cases could be ordered from factory certified or approved third party manufacturer and not necessarily needs to be factory production only. This will significantly decrease your service price and shorter waiting time in some cases.

Cons: there are a lot of independent shops around. It is a big market and a lot of competition which is a good thing from the one side, but really confusing at another. How to choose the right one from these facilities? Reading tons of reviews on Yelp and other social media does not guarantee you'll get the perfect one or the best experience ever. Those reviews are really subjective. At this case wide range of quality is involved. So you have do a really good research to find the best and still no guarantee the best result.
